Small island west of Barnénez point, south-west of l'Ile Blanche.
This long stretched rocky islet of about sixty meters in length and a dozen meters in width, is located in Morlaix bay, opposite of the Château du Taureau. Very arid with no vegetation it leaves only a glimpse of a white tower, a daymark well recognized by all the sailors passing by.
It is possible to reach it by feet from the Barnenez peninsula at very low tide.
Though almost submerged at high tide the rock had a human presence between 1845 and 1938 for the lighthouse duty, the different caretakers facing difficult living conditions.
Its fortress look is particularly impressive at night. This may be the reason why many local legends refer to it. Hergé, Tintin 's father, was even inspired by it for one of his comics.
Beyond the popular imagination, the "Black Island", which in reality is rather white, plays a strategic role in the Morlaix bay. Its lighthouse, now extinct, is a known daymark for all sailors : it gives in alignment with the La Lande lighthouse the channel direction to reach Morlaix.
