In August of 1908 during a thunderstorm, 13 inches of rain fell on Johnson’s Mesa causing torrents of water to rush down through Wild Horse Arroyo. The town of Folsom was devastated and 17 people lost their lives. The storm caused massive erosion along the banks of the arroyo revealing Pleistocene bison bones. As George McJunkin, a ranch hand at the Crowfoot Ranch, rode the fence line to look for damage, he found the bones and collected some of them. He had a keen interest in the natural sciences and started an inquiry that eventually resulted in the professional excavation of the site. In all, 19 unique, fluted projectile points were found associated with 23 Pleistocene bison skeletons. After about 20 years and much controversy, the Folsom Culture was finally recognized by archaeologist and the date of early man in America was established at about 9ooo BC. This was about 5300 years earlier than previously thought. Today, the date of early man in America has been pushed back considerably more.
