Bullen Decline

This operating gold mine near Norseman is named after Eric Bullen, Norseman resident who worked for Central Norseman Gold Corporation as a leading hand maintenance fitter for 56 years until 1989.

The mine accesses the Bluebird Link gold orebody, at 1.1 kilometres below the surface. The orebody is thought to extend down to 3 kilometres. The tunnel gradient is 1-9, 5.5 metres by 5.5 metres to accommodate the Caterpiller haul trucks. The mine commenced operations in September 1991.

Production & Mining Methods

The key characteristics of the Norseman orebodies that govern mining method selection are typically:

(i) narrow vein, between 0.3m to 4.0m wide;
(ii) highly variable in geometry over short distances;
(iii) high grade and nuggetty, that is grade can vary widely over short distances;
(iv) ground conditions are generally good.

With these characteristics, selective mining methods are required, with the mining methods in use at Norseman consisting of:
longhole and mechanised stoping, and airleg stoping.

Coordinates are for the Bullen decline. The tailings dumps are located approximately 1 km east of the decline.
