Magnetite from
St. Joe River, Shoshone County, Idaho, USA

Locality type:River
Classification
Species:Magnetite
Formula:Fe2+Fe23+O4
Comments:Heavily magnetic, magnetite grains were recovered from alluvial gravels while panning for garnet. Rarity was selected as average. It is likely that these small alluvial magnetite grains are quite common, but having little commercial value they go unnoticed.
Habit:Most larger grains were heavily rounded, but several smaller grains showed perfect isometric crystal habit, including several very tiny but pretty octahedrons.
Colour:black, some with bluish iridescence
Quality for species:Poor for species, only of interest for locality collectors. (#)

Validity:Confirmed
