Identity HelpLocality Information for Rose Quartz In Manitoba

16th Nov 2009 20:48 UTCRonald John Gyllenhammer Expert

Hello,

I have a large dark pink specimen of Rose Quartz labeled "Manitoba, Canada". It comes out of an old collection that has proven to have precise and accurate labels, however this one simply says, Manitoba. Mindat does not list a location for Rose Quartz in Manitoba. Although, I've seen a few references in the literature for "good specimens coming from Manitoba". This only, with no specific locations listed. Can anyone be of further assistance? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ron

In Ann Sabina's Rocks and Minerals for the Collector (the Sudbury to Winnipeg edition) The Birse Lake Occurrence is reported to have Rose Quartz, Tourmaline, Beryl and Apatite.

The rose quartz is a deep pink colour and is reported to be equal to the best rose quartz from other countries. The gem collection of the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, contains several stones cut as oval cabochons; the largest is 20mm long. Also in the collection are carvings and spheres, including one which shows asterism (a 6-rayed star.)

From looking at the map, it is about 12 km east of the more well known Bernic Lake (Tanco) Mine. Guess I've got some posting to do to the Mindat database!

http://images.rom.on.ca/public/index.php?function=query&action=prompt&sid=&ccid= will take you to the ROM search page - type in "rose quartz" and you will see a sample from Birse Lake.

Hi Maggie,

Thank you for helping me find a source for this Specimen. Without an actually place name on the label other than Manitoba there will of course never be certainty but my search for it's source is a bit closer now thanks to you! I appreciate your valuable assistance, thanks again.

Ron
