Identity HelpGreen Anglesite from Sardinia - which mine?
14th Dec 2009 22:34 UTCRoger Lang Manager
today i found some 4 or 5 specimens of bright green anglesite from Sardinia in an old collection i just acquired. They are labelled (one label for all) which states 'Grüner Anglesit, F.O. Gennamari, Süd-Sardinien' (GER) which means green anglesite, locality Gennamari, South Sardinia.
Looking for green anglesite pictures on mindat i only find those from Monteponi. Anyone can confirm Gennamari - especially the Italian specialists (Matteo?) ?? Pictured specimen is approx 5 cm high.
Thx in advance.
Cheers
Roger

There are reports of many years ago of green anglesite from Gennamari but, it was light green, your samples has a very intense green, like the green of the other yard of Montevecchio, the Sanna yard, mostly know for the green anglesite.

I bought a green Anglesite recently, labelled as being from "Monteponi Mine". There was an old "F. Kranz in Bonn" label with it, stating the locality as Monteponi. In my label I have changed this to "Montevecchio Mine", thinking it was an obvious mistake, as the xls are an intense mint-green that is typical of Montevecchio Anglesite. Matrix is solid Galena and the xls are found in a cavity lined with botryoidal Goethite/Limonite, with small highly etched Quartz grains.
Is there any case that the specimen is indeed from Monteponi, and not Montevecchio?

Green anglesite, in Sardinia, is found only at Montevecchio, is it an anglesite?.

I would say it is definitely coming from Montevecchio.
Specimens like that were around in the market until few years ago (now they are far more difficult to get).

thanks for your comments so far.
There are 2 labels with those green anglesites - i found another specimen with a label - and both labels list Gennamari - the specimens are obviously at least 100 years old so maybe a rather unknown find??? There are other "normal" anglesites with Monteponi labels (and some quite large Phosgenites from there too) so i don´t think the labelling was without knowledge. I know about the green ones from Monteponi and have seen some of them but those specimens do not really compare with. i will take pictures of the other samples asap and post them too.
cheers

now some more pictures, first is a detail from the above posted,, second row is another specimen. paragenesis is host rock, (palisade) quartz(?), partly sulfides sparks (pyrite/chalcopyrite), corroded galena. Also labelled as Gennamari. Will post a 3rd specimen with detail crystal picture (to assure this is no fluorite or else ;-) )
Cheers
