PhotosChromian Grossular

The cubic appearance and lack of striations or cleavage on the green phase suggests these are Chromian Grossular, which are common at the Orford Mine. The Diopside here is a lighter green and occurs as elongate prisms.

Richard,

The green crystals appear to be rhombic dodecahedrons, consistent with the crystallography of garnets.  And I would guess that the color and locality are consistent with them being chromian.  But color is not a good indicator of species in the garnet group.  You might want to have a chip tested.

Hi Don:

These garnets have been tested several times and there is a Mineralogical Record article on the mine with garnet chemistry. These are garnet and not Diopside.

Hi Uwe:

There is a second photograph posted, it was next to the questioned photo,  that has the same problem and should be changed to Chromian Grossular.

Fixed.
