My wife and I are in Denver for the 2022 show.  I will post here some of my experiences.  Today we’re at the convention center for the Hard Rock Summit, Evolution, and Sparkle and Joy shows.  Photo above is the registration area but the most important first stop is below!

The pic doesn’t really show it, but the Evolution show is much busier this year.  The high end stuff is still super expensive, but there are a few smaller dealers with reasonable prices scattered throughout.  I may have accidentally bought a few things.

Lousy pic of some interesting gold displays outside the Evolution show.  There’s also a gemstone trade show going on but it’s industry-only.

That’s it for today, we’re off to poke around downtown Denver.  We’ll be at the Crowne Plaza show (aka the Airport Show) tomorrow.

9th Sep 2022 00:28 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

The ticketing for the show was a real pain in the rear. You had to buy the tickets and then fill out a registration form. You also needed to show some proof of identity. (maybe because of all the gold there and it had been widely publicized). If you had 50 or sixty people waiting to get in, it could easily take half an hour They had the evolution show, the club show and AGTA there..

9th Sep 2022 00:53 UTCtiny minerals

I only had to pay $10, didn’t have to do any registration?  It was oddly handled though.

9th Sep 2022 01:00 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

$10 was the standard rate. They did give you a tag on a neckband where you would put the registration and a ticket. I went through the ticket "booth"  shown on your first photo, probably about an hour later.

9th Sep 2022 01:04 UTCtiny minerals

Huh, interesting.  I just had a ticket, that was it.

9th Sep 2022 01:08 UTCKevin Conroy Manager

I'll echo David and "tiny's" comments.  I found out a few things (after waiting in a stationary registration line for far too long).

Traffic wasn't too bad, but I thought that getting from the parking garage to the right doors for the shows was very poorly marked, as in NO signs at all!

Once inside the convention center there were people to direct you to the "registration area".  Everyone was filling out these forms, only to find out that if you just wanted to buy an admission ticket you didn't need the form.  There was only one non-registration ticket line (marked with a hand written small sign) on the right side of several well-marked "registration" lines.   These lines were moving extremely slow.   I'm not sure what they were doing, but it was taking at least 5 minutes per person to get them on their way.  Skip the hassle, don't fill out a form, walk up to the right side line and buy your ticket.

The club show is on the first floor.  This is where all of the usual display cases are (museums, etc.).   Way smaller space than what it was at the Mart.  The cases are worth seeing though, some really good stuff in them.

Downstairs is everything else.  You have to show your ticket to get into each show.  Some more good stuff on display on the lower level.  To the left at the bottom of the escalator is where the high end dealers are.  Lots of really good specimens, with high prices to match.

Overall impression: the show is worth going to, but it could be so much better with a few signs.

9th Sep 2022 01:17 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Well, I was stopped by a policeman and he checked my registration (I wasn't all that scruffy). As I was at the registration, she said I needed to have already bought a ticket. Quickly moved over to the ticket seller, bought the ticket and returned to the registration line before she could send me to the back of the line.

Too bad nobody had enough sense to have the folks registering guests sell them tickets too!

9th Sep 2022 08:22 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Well, that would have needed a lot more ticket printing machines and people handling money/credit cards. They had to reload blank tickets into the printer when it ran out of blanks. It really was a lack of information on what procedure needed to be followed (there were also a couple of other ticketing booths scattered around).

Thank you for posting this Denver show report of activities because I could not go, and it's always good to see and hear what's happening.

Sounds a bit more complicated than when I went in 1985.  Was simple then.

9th Sep 2022 08:16 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

It was simple last year. Only had to get wrist bands.

It's easy at the Crowne Plaza show... Just park (for free) and walk in  ;))

9th Sep 2022 13:51 UTCtiny minerals

Today we decided to add one more show, the “Just Minerals “ show in Aurora - we’ll hit that after the Crowne Plaza.  I hadn’t heard of that one, but a dealer mentioned it and it sounds interesting.  It does mean that I don’t get to have Korean BBQ (yum!) for lunch, we’ll just have it for dinner instead!

9th Sep 2022 14:15 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Just one problem with the "Just Minerals" show is that they are setting up today and will open to the public tomorrow. Erin is going to be helping out at that show.

9th Sep 2022 15:04 UTCtiny minerals

Yes, I’m actually going to be helping someone with setup, so it won’t be a good report.  We might swing through tomorrow to see the real thing.

The Crowne Plaza show is purely dealers so I didn’t take many photos.  It was nice to see a lot more small international dealers than last year.  The sales areas were quote busy!  I hope the dealers are seeing good numbers.  The show opened today, so the ones I chatted with had only been selling for a few hours, but all said they were doing well.

A view of the main floor - many of the dealers are in individual hotel rooms or meeting rooms, but there’s one big ballroom set up with about 60(?) dealers.  I didn’t go to the tent area - last year it was all wholesale.

03371500017069801455872.jpg
As expected I don’t have much for the “Just Minerals” show as I was just helping with setup.  Looks like about 15-ish dealers in an event/conference space in a strip mall.  There was not much signage when we left.

04576200017069801467219.jpg
This was the only sign.  Google maps did lead us directly there.  From the setups we saw, it looks promising.  If we’re up to it, we might be back tomorrow - the National Western Complex takes a lot of energy!

07408080017069801475288.jpg
In addition to being very extensive, the National Western Complex, given its other uses each year, also has some amusing signs at the entrances to the exhibit spaces. That said, this is not necessarily bad advice for any gem and mineral show.

10th Sep 2022 01:55 UTCtiny minerals

That’s great!  That show gets crowded, and strollers and wagons often block some of the narrower aisles.

10th Sep 2022 01:56 UTCDan Polhemus

02191140017069801494050.jpg
Speaking of keeping a safe distance, one booth had a rather powerful shortwave UV light illuminating its Peruvian calcite specimens. Certainly makes an attractive display, but "Do Not Touch" would be reasonable advice (or at the very least, do not keep your hand there for very long).

There are some bargains and new material to be found here.  Getting to all of the levels can be challenging, as is trying to systematically see each aisle.  For the die-hard mineral collectors, there's a lot of things that won't be of interest.  However, if you put in the effort to look carefully you'll be rewarded.

10th Sep 2022 20:21 UTCtiny minerals

03239690017069801509967.jpg
We did roll back to the Just Minerals show - there was an additional yard sign and a small banner.   It was only lightly busy around lunchtime, but the dealers I chatted with seemed pretty happy.

10th Sep 2022 03:39 UTCDoug Daniels

Kinda the problem with these mega-shows (Denver, Tucson, several others)... so much to see, so little time.  Then you buy what you think is a great specimen, then three dealers down you find one that is even better, for a lesser price.  Then you walk around saying "sun-on-the-beach.  Had I only waited..."

10th Sep 2022 11:39 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Did find out the reason behind the strange timing of the shows. It appears that the Convention center was not available next weekend. They said it would return to it's normal place on the calendar for next year.

10th Sep 2022 12:50 UTCDan Polhemus

The downtown show, in addition to being primarily a display venue for ultra fancy specimens that mere mortals cannot afford, is also awkwardly located in comparison to the other two big shows, which are on the northeast side of Denver. The recent improvements to I-70 have now made it much easier to move back and forth between the National Western and Crowne Plaza venues (took me less than 15 minutes yesterday), and both of those shows have large amounts of free parking and no entrance fees or associated wristband hassles. At the Crowne Plaza several dealers had nice selections of the very attractive green fluorite coming out of Madagascar, as well as some of the Ojuela fluorites from Mexico that fluoresce ruby red under long wave UV (had not seen so many of those lately). At the National Western site, the Miners Coop is not to be overlooked as a source of interesting western US specimens at very good prices. In an adjacent space one of the Near Eastern dealers had tables with big piles of aquamarine, tourmaline, and spodumene at a very reasonable set prices per gram that one could sort through at leisure for specimens with decent luster and intact crystal faces. I picked out eleven multicolored examples of spodumene with decent faces from Kunar, Afghanistan (probably Dara-e-Pech  material, but who knows in that part of the world), which made wonderful thumbnail box mounts and cost me only 20 bucks for the works. Not bad.

Also notable is the dealers that are absent. Due to the ongoing war, none of the Russians can come to the US, so they are a no-show. Similarly, covid restrictions in China have kept most of their dealers at home as well. So the dealer mix tilts heavily toward those from the US, Latin America, Morocco and India - and even a bit material from Greenland  is starting to show up on the European side of things.

10th Sep 2022 14:23 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

The downtown show also includes the old Denver club shows and their dealers are priced much more reasonably than the Hard Rock dealers.

10th Sep 2022 14:31 UTCDan Polhemus

The problem with the downtown convention center is that space rental is expensive compared to what it used to be at the now-demolished Denver Merchandise Mart out northeast, so my sense is that there are far fewer smaller dealers and club booths now at the main show than there used to be, which is too bad.

10th Sep 2022 17:10 UTCAlfredo Petrov Manager

Dan, I did see a few Russian dealers at the Crown Plaza. No direct flights for them anymore, so they had to take detours through Minsk and Baltic countries, but they got here.

10th Sep 2022 21:19 UTCDan Polhemus

Alfredo - you are right, I did eventually locate two Russian dealers working out of rooms in the Crowne Plaza (right next to a room with a Ukrainian couple selling minerals from the Carpathian Mountains). I even bought a piece of rough iowaite from one of the Russians, and chatted with him for awhile. I asked if he had trouble getting to Denver, and he said things were "very difficult." In addition to the indirect air routings (he had come via Istanbul), there is also the problem of getting a visa, which is currently required. That takes 3-5 weeks, presuming it is approved.

I also saw one Chinese woman at a Crowne Plaza booth selling minerals from her home country (the other Chinese mineral dealers seemed to using Americans to staff their booths). She stood out as being one of the only masked people at the show, and for good reason. If she were to contract covid while in the US, it could be difficult for her to get back into China, due to their strict policies.

Hopefully by next year all these problems will be behind us.

There are actually 4-5 different shows here but they run together quite a bit.  There were fewer mineral dealers than in previous years - a lot more lapidary, jewelry, and wholesale dealers.  I noted last year that several of the large Moroccan dealers had started putting prices out - this year they reverted to “you have to ask” - oh well.

04426780017069801583077.jpg
It was a wet and chilly early fall day in Denver (the coldest day since back on 21 May of this year), so it seems that everyone decided to come to the gem and mineral shows and get in out of the rain. The extensive parking at the National Western venue was maxed, which hopefully translates into good sales.

For more discriminating rhodochrosite buyers, the new Detroit City portal upslope of the former Sweet Home Mine seems to now be producing specimens that approach the quality of what previously came from there, as seen in this display at the Crowne Plaza show.

Pic of one of my finds - color is off - little vivianite thumb.1

Concluding thoughts - we had a good trip and the overall show was very good.  I think in the future we will allocate less time to the NWC shows - the focus there has drifted farther from things I specifically shop for.  The Just Minerals show was new to me, I’ll check it out again in the future.  My favorite remains the Crowne Plaza show.  Overall I spent less than I budgeted but got some nice stuff.  Other than the ticketing issues I thought the shows at the Convention Center worked better this year, at least from the perspective of an attendee.  I’d be interested in dealer perspectives on all the shows - what worked and didn’t?

I didn’t see much in the way of new material - one of the Mexico dealers had some fluorite-calcite-aragonite combos she said were new but I didn’t catch the locality.
The Miner’s Coop show had a new-to-me miner, with amethyst from the Hummingbird Mine in CO.

We’re already plotting our return next year.

Btw apologies for the abundant typos - been posting on my phone whenever I had an odd moment.

11th Sep 2022 14:10 UTCDan Polhemus

Thanks for the consistent reporting and photos. As it turned out, I made most of my purchases at the NWC shows, but that was primarily because Michael Shannon, who was set up in the Arena section along with many of the other actual mineral dealers, was selling off the Jerry Baird thumbnail collection at quite reasonable prices for some very rare species. Jerry did not bother with second rate specimens, so all his thumbs were top notch.

The Crowne Plaza show was very busy on the first opening morning on the wholesale side, where folks literally mobbed some of the vendors like Midwest Minerals. It looked like the Macy's sale on the day after Thanksgiving. This was largely because they did not do any Thursday pre-sales this year. Once that abated, the pace out there was far more sedate. By contrast, with its broad advertising campaign, the NWC complex attracted a huge number of walk-ins from the general public on a rainy weekend, including lots of children, most of whom quickly tripped out on all the shiny things in the healing crystal and lapidary booths. I had to go a very long way to get parking on Saturday, even in the huge (but free) Coliseum lot south of the freeway. The downtown show at the Convention Center is going to have a hard time competing with this going forward, since the families that used to go to the main show when it was at the Merchandise Mart now all come to the NWC shows instead. I did not check out the Just Minerals show, but might do so today.
