Mineral ExchangesV- and Mo-containing spinels

3rd Jan 2017 13:38 UTCDaniel Höllen

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am currently working on a research project about the mineralogy and leachability of steel slags. We think that molybdenum and vanadium might be incorporated in spinel phases. We have gained some beamtime at a synchrotron facility to test this hypothesis by XANES measurements. However, for this purpose we need appropriate standards, i.e. V- and/or Mo-contaning spinels. Can anybody help us with this issue? Thank you very much!

Yours faithfully

Daniel Höllen

On this page http://www.mindat.org/min-29156.html you find the now known and recognized spinels. A few of them incorporate indeed V and in nature, a lot of solid solution takes place, so V may be found as an accessory in many spinels (s.l.). But Mo is not mentioned as a component, but of course, it may be different in slags. With rare minerals or 'species' dealers, it may be not so difficult to obtain V-bearing spinels, but Mo-bearing spinels seems non-existant.
