Tinzenite or sursassite?Hello All,This old-time specimen was labelled as tinzenite from  (Tinzen), Surses, Albula Region, Grisons, Switzerland  However, at least to my eyes and the comparisons of other specimens on MINDAT, it looks like a lamellar sursassite. Is there ...

Nov 2018Re: Kolwezite - Kolwezi, Kolwezi District, Katanga, Democratic Republic of the CongoReply from Christopher O'Neill in Photos.
Gents, Yes, it is very green, no incorrect color and yes it does look like fuzzy malachite. I can get a sample of this specimen analyzed (EDS) as I am sending several other mineral samples up to Kerry Day. These photos should probably pulled from public gallery until I get results from ...

Sep 2017Re: Britholite - Kyshtym, Urals Region, RussiaReply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Pavel, Thanks for your reply. The specimen is 7.5 x 5.5 cm and is only slight radioactive. The yellow is resinous (gummite-like) and not quartz, however very low radioactivity compared to Ruggles Mine type gummite specimens There is also minor orange fluorescent mineral in long-wave ...
Sep 2017Britholite - Kyshtym, Urals Region, RussiaPosted by Christopher O'Neill in General.
Hello, I can't identify associated minerals in this particular specimen and there are not many specimens from this region posted in MINDAT that I can visually reference. I suspect the britholite (Ce) is the reddish crystalline but I am puzzled by the resinous-like yellow mineral. This specimen ...
Sep 2017Name that Collector....Posted by Christopher O'Neill in General.
Hello all, I have had many specimens with this persons label however I have never been able to find out who this collector was. Is anyone out there familiar with these anonymous typed labels? Thanks, Chris Photo
Jul 2018Re: Cerite var. RESSINGITE - has anyone heard of this??Reply from Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
Thanks Alfredo, Maybe so with pronunciation, but with a typewriter?? So it is not actually CERITE after all, but Britholite (Ce)? Chris
Jul 2018Cerite var. RESSINGITE - has anyone heard of this??Posted by Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
Hello all, I have an old Thompson Fund specimen of CERITE. Label states variety - RESSINGITE - and I can't find anything pertaining to this varietal name. I can not find the location of Tenbari, Korea as well, although this may be misspelled. Any help would be appreciated. Chris

Sep 2016Re: Pennsylvania Mine location helpReply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Jeff / Mark, I took a closer look and you are right it is yellow / waxy and not white. See attached close-ups below displaying thorite and altered pale yellow thorogummite. Perhaps the green fluorescence is some other alteration mineral or closely intermixed associated mineral. I changed the ...
Sep 2016Re: Pennsylvania Mine location helpReply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Thanks guys, Nice work and I appreciate everyone's input. I posted one of the specimens here: http://www.mindat.org/photo-775653.html This is a pretty hot piece for a PA locale . Regards, Chris
Sep 2016Pennsylvania Mine location helpPosted by Christopher O'Neill in General.
Hello, I recently acquired some PA material with ball point pen (1960's and 70's ?) handwritten labels: One (mostly typical uranophane ++ specimens) states: west side of west adit, south side of US 209, Jim Thorpe, Carbon County Pennsylvania. Is this referencing a specific mine in that ...

Carsten, I would have to send it up to Kerry Day for EDS. I usually wait until I have about a dozen specimens to be analyzed and then send the lot. Regards, Chris

All, Here are some additional photos that may help. It is wedge shaped like an ax. It is also fluorescent pale orange red in short, mid and long wave UV - similar to Brumado, Bahia, Brazil. Photo Photo
Dec 2015Re: Fabricated provenanceReply from Christopher O'Neill in Fakes & Frauds.
Hello, Another scenario. I have already posted a mineral and it has been given a Mindat ID, but now I plan on trimming it, potentially becoming two specimens. In a sense, the original specimen and it’s Mindat ID no longer exist. Now I want to post one of the two “new specimens”. ...

One other thought, Would this area be considered part of the Beaverlodge area? Chris
Oct 2015Re: Can new locality be added for Laird Island Tazan Lk?Reply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Reiner, Yes that's TAZIN Lake, sorry bout that. I don't think finding where the deposit actually was will be an easy task. "Laird Island, Tazin Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada" would do just fine for now. Regards, Chris
Oct 2015Re: Can new locality be added for Laird Island Tazan Lk?Reply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Uwe, I guess locality would be as follows: Laird Island, Tazan Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada Laird Island is within Tazan Lake. Regards, Chris

Sep 2015Re: Canada Experts (eh?) - Phlogopite, QuebecReply from Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
Hello, I will try a bit of the red matrix in vinegar to determine if it is calcite. The last question: is it common for the apatite to fluoresce that blue in MID-wave from that region? It is fairly bold (almost resembling typical scheelite in short-wave) and I would think this would have ...
Sep 2015Canada Experts (eh?) - Phlogopite, QuebecPosted by Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
Hello All, I am trying to verify a location for this specimen. Old hand written label states " PHLOGOPITE- MCDONALD MINE, CANTLY, QUE" I can't find any info on this location but I was hoping the matrix assemblage might give a clue. The matrix is pale red and can scratch baryte and ...
Mar 2015Re: Harstigen Mine - Caryopilite?Reply from Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
Hello again, I sent two crystalline samples for EDS analysis and they both indicate "spessartine". Would you all agree? Does the Mn / Fe spike indicate something otherwise? I would like to post this specimen, as it is an interesting assemblage of minerals for this locality. Photo
Mar 2015Re: Harstigen Mine - Caryopilite?Reply from Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
All, First off, thanks for all your input on this. I have a section I will be sending out for EDS analysis but in the mean time I checked hardness. Easily scratch calcite Easily scratch baryte Easily scratch fluorite Easily scratch fluorapatite Does not scratch almandine Does not ...
Mar 2015Harstigen Mine - Caryopilite?Posted by Christopher O'Neill in Identity Help.
Hello, I am trying to determine is the following specimen is indeed caryopilite. Although it appears that the light brown caryopilite displays a garnet-like dodecahedral, stair-step faces, the last photos indicates it does not have the typical garnet cleavage or fracture and is more ...
Jan 2015Re: Selection; oldest or newest first, gives a reaction what's oppositReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello, I am having similar issues. In my gallery, the "newest" & "oldest" sort order doesn't work. They seem to sort in a weird random order. Is there a way that you cab fix this using the photo ID #'s as a chronological criteria? Regards, Chris
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello, In my gallery, the "newest" & "oldest" sort order doesn't work. They seem to sort in a weird random order. Is there a way to fix this using the photo ID #'s as a chronological field? Regards, Chris

Hello, Is anyone aware of this and is attempting a fix? Regards, Chris
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Alex, The issue I am having is still not solved. If I choose either "newest" or "oldest" the photos are still listed in a random order. The 2 specimens I just posted a couple of days ago show up on the next to last page of all the minerals I have ever listed. Many of the other specimens ...
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello again, I think I see what the issue is. If I choose "all" and either "newest" or "oldest" the photos are now listed in a random order and not in the order in which they were chronologically submitted. (and while searching through all the photos, I see the latest ones that i have ...
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Debbie, Looks like I don't have permissions for the 'unapproved images' option. If I am either logged in or out, the first "all" and "newest" photo in my gallery is still the Synadelphite. I don't understand why you can see the new photos and I can not. Seems like something is still ...
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello Debbie, That's strange, because they still do not show up when I view "all" & "newest" photos. So, you see these as the first two newest submitted photos, with the Synadelphite as the 3rd photo down on my page? Chris
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Alex, Thanks, I added them to favorites...... Chris
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello again, This is still not working for me either. I then attempted to reload the photos but Mindat states that they already exist (and has a link to these photos as well). So, they exist somewhere in Mindat, yet still do not show up in my gallery. This is one of them ...
Jan 2015Re: Newly submitted pictures (not approved yet) no longer visibleReply from Christopher O'Neill in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello, Perhaps this is a similar problem: I have submitted some new photos, yet they don't even appear in my gallery. I understand that they are not approved, but they used to show up in my gallery immediately. Chris
Dec 2014Re: Does anyone else think the AMNH displays are lacking?Reply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
I remember the original mineral display from back in the late 1960's. Rows and rows and rows of of wooden glass display cases with thousands of minerals. Gee, I wish I understood then, what I understand now... And of course their large highlighted displays such as the Topaz, Jade, giant Bisbee ...

Sep 2014Re: Uraninite Brazil - searching for exact locationReply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Vitya and Rob, I use a Ludlum Model 3 with a 44-9 probe so its a pretty good counter. And Rob, I agree that this should be sent out for EDS, I have a number of items ready to send up to Kerry Day, so I will include this as well. It could be very interesting if is NOT uraninite as well. I ...
Sep 2014Re: Uraninite Brazil - searching for exact locationReply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Rob, If it is a mineral other then uraninite, it seems more like Baddeleyite from the MG region.
Sep 2014Re: Uraninite Brazil - searching for exact locationReply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Luis, These are from an old Louis Zara collection. The only confirmation I could make is that they are radioactive and you can see a round alteration hole in the lower right of the top photo. I could send a sample out for EDS to verify but I thought I would at least find another example of this ...
Sep 2014Uraninite Brazil - searching for exact locationPosted by Christopher O'Neill in General.

Jan 2015Re: Any younger users like myself?Reply from Christopher O'Neill in General.
Yep, I was once 16 as well.... and there is an old saying from my neck of the woods - "don't sleep with your autunite under your bed". I later realized that this applied to all U minerals. I have had LOADS of radioactives and I'm still here typing away...... Best of luck as there is a whole ...
