This open pit mine is adjacent to the north from the Wombola Gold Mine. Modern history and geology is probably similar for both sites, but geology information was found for Wombola Dam.
The mine has produced 1.7 Moz. It has a resource of 3.6 Moz.
The pit shows entirely Wombola Dolerite, except for a sliver of the overlying sedimentary rock at the south-eastern edge. Wombola Dolerite consists of biotite-amphibole schist, interbedded with metapelites, and intruded by plagioclase-porphyry tonalitic sills. In the pit the dolerite foliation is parallel to the contact with the sedimentary rock, exposed at the southern edge of the pit.
The pit is on a large scale open fold plunging gently south-east. Exploration trenches 100 metres to the north of the pit, show fold plunging gently north-west. This has been interpreted as non cylindrical folds possibly north-west to south-east doubly plunging.
The pit is elongated north-west to south-east to intersect a number of steep north-west dipping mineralised quartz veins. The gold bearing quartz veins cross cut the Wombola domain, and trend broadly north-east to south-west, a few cms to 40 cms wide. There are two types of veins, the first north-east trending from the pit intersecting along a line plunging steeply north; and a second trending east north-east dipping moderately to steeply north or south intersecting along a line plunging gently west south-west.
