Zeolites are found in a fine-grained very hard basalt of Miocene age in a small quarry just north of the first roadcut northwest of the town of Monument. The site was first collected at by John Cowles in 1964 and became well known in 1971 during a Northwest Micro Mineral Study Group field trip led by Rudy Tschernich. Later in the 1980's a "V" shaped trench was dug for a water line from the nearby water reservoir to reach the town of Monument. During construction of the trench more material was exposed and the old quarry was removed.
