Java is a hamlet in the municipality of Wanze. Before the fusion of Belgian municipalities in 1977, it was part of the municipality of Bas-Oha (which is now a sub-municipality of Wanze).

Translation of the information provided by the external link below:

"It is not a mine, but a cross-cut. Originally, it was 7.5 kilometers long, today, only 3.5 kilometers remain. The rest of the tunnel is collapsed. This gallery belonged to the Société des mines de Sclessin and opened in 1830 in a completely artisanal way. This long gallery was dug in shales and quicksand in order to reduce costs and to reach the Couthuin mine: a difficult operation. The tunnel finally reached this mine in 1882, totaling 10 years of effort.

The gallery is practically completely straight, but flooded by a meter of dirty water after 300 meters. In the first third, there is an uninspiring little pump room. The tunnel barely leaves room for a small mine cart, measuring 1.70 m (5.5ft) high by 1.20 m (3.9ft) wide.

The Couthuin mines are no longer accessible, there are only dumps on the surface. This mine stopped its activity in 1897 and resumed a year later in the hopes of finding calamine. There would have been about 170 workers in 1920. On the pithead of the Java mine, there is absolutely nothing left to find. It is reported that in 1927, then under the concession of SA Ougrée Marinhaye, exploitation was intensive. The mine carts were pulled by a locomotive using a trolley. On certain passages, there was a chain winch, as in the Hayange mine. The mine is said to have ceased operations in 1945.

This mine is closed with a strong metal gate. It is therefore inaccessible.
Note also the presence of a small closed tunnel, in the garden of a private individual, very close to the mine. He cannot say what it is."

The remains of an old sandstone quarry can also be observed on the lower hillside next to the railroad tracks. A sandstone outcrop above Java is known by local collectors for fenster quartz specimens that are found in the lithoclases that riddle the quarzose sandstone.
