A W occurrence/prospect located in the NWΒΌ sec. 1, T9N, R11E, MDM, 3.5 km (2.2 miles) NW of Somerset, high on the S slope of a ridge, N of the headwaters area of Long Ravine (1 mile NW of Buck's Bar; 7 miles SE of Placerville). Discovered in 1954. Operated by F. T. Lee and J. Needham. Prospected in 1956. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in Calaveras Group quartzite and mica schist. The ore body is pinch & swell in form. The tactite pinches out near the surface and widens at depth. The greatest width of exposed tactite is about 12 feet. The scheelite is in thin parallel streaks near the center of the tactite body. Associated rocks include diorite. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include surface openings comprised of an open cut 20 feet long, 20 feet wide and 15 feet high.
Production data are found in: Clark and Carlson (1956).
In 1956, several tons of ore were mined for a milling test. Analyses showed that part of the deposit contains 1 to 2% WO3.
