The bedrock in Crawford County is Cambrian to Ordovician sedimentary rocks, primarily clean quartz sandstones, limestones, shales and dolostones. Softer Cambrian sandstone underlie valleys, with the more resistant Ordovician rocks holding up highlands. The area is in Wisconsin's "Driftless Area", meaning it apparently missed glaciation during the Pleistocene. River processes have pleasantly carved the landscape into a series of high hills ("mounds") and deep valleys ("coulees"). Scenic bluffs line the Wisconsin and Mississippi River Valleys. Driving the "Great River Road" (Highway 35) as it wends its way along the Mississippi is a great way to enjoy this country.

The carbonate rocks are often quarried, and can yield samples of calcite, dolomite, quartz and marcasite. The County is on the northern fringe of the Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-Lead District. The district is laterally zoned. In Crawford County the low temperature hydrothermal ore forming fluids resulted primarily in a number of small copper deposits. The mines working these deposits were small, and are now overgrown or reclaimed. Still road cuts, quarries and other excavations hold the promise of uncovering some of these minerals.

Even though in the Driftless Area, deposits from rivers draining glaciated areas to the north and east hold the promise of finding drift copper, "Lake Superior" agates and other minerals in outwash.
