Snowdon Mine
A copper mine, first mentioned around 1800, by the lake of Llyn Llydaw on the slopes of Mt Snowdon. The mine was worked intermittently β if rather unsuccessfully β for over 100 years by a number of companies including the Snowdon and Dalawin Copper Mines (1847); Cwm Dyle Rock and Green Lake Copper Mining Company (1851); Cwmdyle Copper Mining Ltd (1857); Gt Snowden Copper Mining Company (1873); North Wales United Mines (1890); by perhaps the best known company, the Britannia Copper Mine Ltd (1898); and finally by the Penypass Copper Company (1915). The mine closed in 1916.
Some of the 8 levels remain, together with the remains of the Britannia mill and other buildings around the lake shore.
Further details, including a plan and section of the mine and underground black and white photos, are in Colman and Laffoley (1986).
