Eau Claire County is underlain mostly by Cambrian sandstones. Good outcrops occur on many bluffs (such as Mt. Simon in Eau Claire) and along rivers, such as the Chippewa. Complex Precambrian rocks, including gneiss, amphibolites and granites are exposed along the Eau Claire River and its tributaries, as is well shown at Big Falls County Park. Glacial drift in the County occurs along large meltwater channels. The drift can provide some interesting samples to the diligent collector, including "float" copper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
