JOLYON, What is your definition of a "museum"? Here in the US, virtually every college and university geology department has cases of minerals. If a state university, the cases are often nice examples of the state's minerals (collector type and economic minerals). If I go to the Colorado School of Mines or Michigan Tech, the cases are quite extensive (representing a classic small museum) while at some schools there are only 1 or 2 cases. So how do you draw a line, if any? Probably doesn't matter much; only semantics.

Is open but not easy to visit. They have even two different collections: The well known "Mineralogisches Kabinett" with historic specimen from the Austro-Hungarian times and the more modern "Wallenta collection" with minerals only from Upper Austria.Usually you must book a trip though the whole building. Unfortunatly some guides do not open the doors to the mineral collections!!!!!! Not even when you ask...... If more friendly guides let you in you have not more than 3 minutes to see everything. A pity.

Bob

I think they ALL should be listed, they are all important!

Is still open. But all minerals are in a deposit now (not open to public). Actually the Museum shows a number of nice fossil finds fom Upper Austria and some other geological samples.

All this information is great - please if you have time update the museum entries!

How can i do it?

2nd Nov 2017 16:00 UTCJohan Kjellman Expert

it is not clear how to edit ones museum - i tried to edit by just reentering data, so now there are two Evolutionsmuseet under Sweden.

Please remove the first one - the one stating that the museum is closed - it is open.

Also, explain how to edit an existing museum post

thanks

I just added The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle. It does not show up. Is there an approval required?

Jolyon,

Is there a plan to be able to associate mineral specimens with a museum, so that we could view MinDat images of specimens housed at that museum? Or, even if the image is not of a single specimen but of a case or hall, it would also be nice to link those to a museum.

Yes, absolutely!

How can I upload/link a photo of the building of a specific museum as head photo and should we add tourist mines (they have in most cases a more or less large mineral display enclosed)?

Martin, go to the museum directory, choose your country and then choose the museum you want to edit. Then click 'edit this museum entry'. Then scroll down to the bottom of the edit page where you see 'Head Photo override' with a couple of blank boxes next to it. Copy the photo ID number (the photo ID number is the number on the place of the xxxxx in this photo url: https://www.mindat.org/photo-xxxxx.html) in the box and click 'save museum entry'

Now your photo is on the museum page.

Not that I know of. It shows up now.

EDIT: Apparently, approval is needed; currently at the bottom of the list of museums, there is an entry "UNAPPROVED ENTRIES - 4 museums". Jolyon: it might be helpful to provide, after someone has added a museum, an automatic message such as "Thank you for adding this museum - your addition will be checked and approved soon."

> Also, explain how to edit an existing museum post

If you click on a museum link and the page opens, is there a link "Edit this museum entry" at the bottom? (You must be logged-in, of course).

Musée du Mange Cailloux, Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, added for France.

Please just have a look to my texts, maybe some grammatical or spelling faults in them.

Thanks a lot Harjo!

I had edited one Austrian museum so far, but I wondered about the four blank boxes at the bottom of the edit page. Your explanation makes sense to me.

6th Nov 2017 01:24 UTCKevin Conroy Manager

I recently added the Missouri Mines State Historic Site, and just went to the listing to add a photo. However, I don't see a 'edit this museum entry' link. Do I need a certain level of editing permission in order to see/access this?

Jean-Marc,

Thank you for your contributions! Few minor changes only.
