Field CollectingWashington State Trip

30th Apr 2017 21:38 UTCRudy Bolona Expert

It looks like I will be attending a family wedding in the Seattle area in September and was thinking of taking a side trip to Washington Pass and see if I can make any finds, especially zektzerite. It looks like a huge area. Any suggestions from collectors who have visited there? It seems as all finds are made in the various talus slopes that run down the mountains. What about the backsides of these peaks? I guess a real adventure like that would require more than the day or two I would have time for.

Cheers!

I have several friends in WA who regularly climb and sometimes dig in that general area. They have never found any Zektzerite, nor have I heard of any being found by anyone recently. The areas adjacent to the highway have been badly picked over from what I have heard and there is little to find even in the way of thumbnail sized quartz specimens. The talus slopes can be dangerous, one friend of mine had his hand significantly injured by sliding rocks coming down one of the slopes during a freak afternoon rainstorm. Washington Pass is about a 3.5hr windy mountain drive from Seattle, and note that the North Cascades Highway in that area is closed during the winter, and last I heard the roads up there were still closed due to snow. Obviously by the summer they will be open.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info though it does not sound very promising. I guess that's why those little pink crystals are so expensive. I guess it's off to pubs instead!

Bart Cannon has been collecting in that area for years. Perhaps you can contact him. I don't have his website handy but his co. name is Cannon Microprobe in Seattle and you can search it. Good luck!

I did my PhD dissertation on the mineralogy of the Golden Horn Batholith. I was up there for 3 days last summer with a couple of collector friends and found one small pocket with about 6 5-6mm zektzerites so stuff can still be found. PM me if you want to get together when you are here. I live off of the north Cascades highway on the way to Washington Pass.
