In the 1930's eight quarries operated in the area. Now there is one. The sandstone with kaolin and halloysite, is stained various colours of cream, yellows and reds by iron oxides. It is used as building material.

Donnybrook stone originates in the early Cretaceous period but its exact date is uncertain. This is because no datable fossils have been recovered, and it sits over an old eroded surface of ancient pre-Cambrian rocks, so there is no clues to its age from the rock layers.

Memorial Hall in Donnybrook is a fine example of use of the material, as well as a number of other buildings in Perth.
