Abandoned gold mine.
The Wellington Gold Mining Company was formed in 1899, and the following year two x 5 head stamp batteries were erected by the Top Valley Stream below the mine. Watty and Young (surnames) are mentioned as erecting the battery.
One writer at the time stated he took several specimens away after a visit to the mine, and testing produced no gold in any of them. The mine was on the Dundee Reef, trending north-west to south-east, dipping east, 1 to 3 feet wide. It is thought after prospecting, and development, the mine closed soon after it opened.
The battery site is marked from the Riverside Walk, from the Top Valley camp ground. The two 5 stamps remain, one still vertical. Also scattered around the site are two berdan pans, camshaft, large steel pullies. A tunnel is further up the hill, however no track leads to it, with thick scrub between.
