The Star Coal Mine was a small mine, with limited information (usually strikes) found across the 1940's (1941-1948). James Neylon (61) was electrocuted and died in 1948 when a boring rig he was operating came into contact with overhead wires. It is described at this time as a state mine, having been taken over by the New Zealand government.
The mine was on the western side of the Ohai coalfield, bordered to the south by the Wairaki No. 3 Mine, and to the north by the Morley Stream, and Wairaki No. 4 Mine.
