Historic gold mine.
Located about one kilometre north-west of Coromandel town, bordering the Hauraki Mine, and similarly named Kathleen Mine.
The Kathleen Crown Gold Mining Company was registered in London in 1896 to acquire the freehold property known as Pukepoto at 92 acres. A shaft was sunk and temporary plant erected on what is promised as a considerable number of reefs, with riches galore.
A small parcel is crushed in 1898. The mine is inactive shortly after, until 1900 when six men are employed to explore the ground further. Two more small amounts of ore are crushed, both early 1901, one amounting to 6 tonnes, all described as test ore, now six years after the mine has opened.
In 1906, the English shareholders invest more money, but it is to no avail, and in 1909 the mine and plant is sold at public auction. Henry Hopper Adams purchased the mine, while J Harrison of Whangarei purchased the plant.
