One of the most important Brazilian rivers has its headwaters in the neighbor municipality (São Roque de Minas). Just few kilometers later receives the waters from the Cachoeira creek, which crosses the diamond-rich Canastra 1 kimberlite. From the 1930's to the 1990's there were several small diamond claims in both sides of the river - Vargem Bonita and São Roque de Minas municipalities. The city of Vargem Bonita itself originated from one of this claims in 1952.
