Iron meteorite (IIAB,Ogg)
Find, 1939; ~38 kg
An iron-rich mass (~5.9% Ni) was found at the base of the Sierra de las Burras in northern Coahuila, ~ 100 km west of Del Rio. While a few piece were sectioned of ~95% of the mass was obtained by the US National Museum. While kamacite is dominant, about 1 vol% of the meteorite is either taenite or plessite. Minor schreibersite and troilite (along with very minor cohenite and daubréelite) are present. Schreibersite occurs as scattered skeleton crystals enveloped in swathing kamacite and as winding boundary veins. The brecciated and sheared schreibersite, deformation bands occur in kamacite, and twinned daubréelite give ample evidence of preterrestrial shock. Terrestrial weatherates are also present, especially in surface pits and in cracks between the kamacite hexahedra. In places troilite is especially corroded.
El Burro is one of of 124 IIAB iron meteorites currently listed with the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (as of early September 2015). It is one of the small minority of IIAB irons with detectable taenite. Two other IIAB Irons — Coahuila and Guadalupe y Calvo — have also been recovered from Chihuahua.
Most of the mass is held at the U.S. National Museum in Washington, D.C. The 31.4 kg specimen has dimensions of 23 x 18 x 17 cm.
