A former drift placer Au mine located in the NE¼ sec. 24, T5N, R11E, MDM, about 3.65 km (about 1½ miles) S of Mokelumne Hill (town), in Chili Gulch, S of the McSorley Ranch. First operated from 1866 to 1871 as the Shaw Hydraulic Mine. Operated during the period 1872 to 1876 and mid-1876 to 1911. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is .
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located in the Duryea paleochannel which courses through this property and trends SW. The channel is 100 feet wide and contains 30 to 40 feet of rounded quartz gravel and clean sand overlain by 10 to 20 feet of compact quartz sand, rhyolitic flows and tuff, and andesitic tuff and breccia. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings. First operated as a hydraulic mine. Mined using a monitor from 1872 to 1876. Drifting began in mid-1876 and remained active until 1911. Workings include a 2,000 foot and a 700 foot adit, a 300 foot crosscut, several shorter adits, and breasts as much as 14 feet high.
Said to have yielded $500,000 by hydraulicking.
