PhotosBaryte - Berbes Mining area, Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain

21st Aug 2014 08:23 UTCJean-Guillaume Soulé

Hi,

I love the Asturian mining district and I go there every year since more than 10 years...I'll be there again in less than 15 days.

The specimen (Blue Baryte) you present on Mindat as a Berbes one is typically from the Moscona mine(Solis, Asturias), really not from the Berbes mining area...this is 100% sure, just ask Jordi Fabre for example if you don't belive me.

Threre's of course Baryte at Berbes but no tabular crystals and for sure no blue ones(unfortunatly!).

Best regards from France.

I agree, the picture shows a Moscona baryte

Cheers

Of course! It is from "La Moscona Mine", Solis, Asturias, Spain. The association of bluish baryte with yellow fluorite is common in "La Moscona Mine".

Baryte from Berbes it is very different. See photo.

One example of blue baryte from "La Moscona Mine":

I posted this question in FMF Spanish forum where Jonhatan (who knows very well Asturian minerals) also agree with Moscona Mine origin for related specimen: "the piece is without doubt from Moscona Mine" he said.
