Identity HelpUnknown white crystals from limestone quarry spoil

17th Jun 2013 18:21 UTCEdward Penrose

I know you're probably thinking it's dolomite/calcite, but it has a hardness of around 6 (wasn't scratched by a knife, but was scratched by quartz.) The streak is white and the fracture is conchoidal. In the photo attached you can see a prismatic crystal in the foreground and a tabular crystal behind it. In the second photo you can see both crystals from the side, and they appear to be slightly wonky (the crystal edges aren't straight.) I know little about the locality, but it is listed (albeit with little info) here http://www.mindat.org/loc-237461.html. It is an old limestone quarry with many spoil heaps, and I have found quite a bit of this mineral in the spoil.

Thanks in advance for any help

Looks like quartz.

Quartz.

That was my first thought, but I also considered albite? Although the verdict seems pretty unanimous, so I'll agree with quartz :-D
