Formula:
(Ce,Ca)9(Mg,Fe)(SiO4)3(HSiO4)4(OH)3
Name:
Cronstedt (1751) described a flesh-colored, heavy rock found in S:t Göransgruvan (St. Görans Mine), Bastnäs mines, Riddarhyttan, Skinnskatteberg, Västmanland, Sweden, which he called "tungsten". This was described together with another heavy mineral, which was white and found at Bispbergs Klack, Säter, Dalarna, Sweden. The later, the white tungsten was showed to contain the new element, tungsten (wolfram) and was later described as the mineral scheelite. The red tungsten, which became known as "Bastnäs tungsten" was later found to contain a new element, first called bastium, after the locality, but shortly after renamed as Cerium. The red mineral was named cerit by Hisinger & Berzelius (1804).
