Hamilton Jenkin records that in 1808 the mine was said to be "throwing up immense quantities of copper, zinc and tin". He goes on to say that by 1870 the mine was 160 fathoms deep and chiefly productive of pyrite and to a lesser extent blende. However the water being pumped from the mine was so acidic [no doubt due to decomposition of the pyrite] that the pipes had to be lined with brass which was economically unsustainable.
Part of the tip forms a very prominent feature beside the cycle path, though the tips extend off through the trees and undergrowth to Bread and Cheese Shaft beside the Carnon River, where there is another small tip. At the top of the main tip is the single wall of an engine house beside a concrete capped shaft. In 1963 Hamilton Jenkin referred to the engine house as "imposing". Marcasite and quartz are both highly abundant in the main tip. Jan 2023
