Indice à terres rares de Mosset
This newly recognised deposit near the village of Mosset ("Pyrénées Orientales") reveals a unusual geological context and a specific mineralogy. The deposit is related to a granitic massif ("Millas pluton") cutting an Ordovician series ("Jujols schists") with carbonate bands transformed in "cipolins". An "iron hat" (gossan) type metasomatic skarn developed from this contact, accompanied by significant quantities of manganese. Some layers of lanthanite-(Ce) appear among the ex-carbonate cipolins, in relation with the gradual transformation of limestone up to a total leaching with an advanced silicification (allophanes, hyalite...). To our best knowledge this is the first deposit in France of limited size but with significant quantities of lanthanite, notable for its crystallization. Origin of rare earths, whether under the form of lanthanite-(Ce) or associated with cerium cobaltiferous wad remains unknown.
