It covers an area over 400 km² and is the largest occurrence of silicic rocks in Iceland (Macdonald et al. 1990; Martin & Sigmarsson 2007). The occurrence is dominated by rhyolites, which form 9 lava fields covering 32 km² (Macdonald et al. 1990) as well as lava domes (Gunnarsson et al. 1998).

The greater part of the rhyolitic extrusives are over 10 ka in age, with lesser areas of post-glacial silicic, basaltic and intermediate lavas (Gunnarsson et al. 1998).
