A Mn occurrence/prospect located in the center sec. 9, T28N, R11W (MD), 3.7 km (2.3 miles) SE of Red Mountain (coordinates of record) (on the W side of the East Fork Prospect Creek, about 1 mile SW of Pineroot Springs, 10 air miles SSW of Wildwood, and about 2 miles from the forest road to Red Mountain lookout), on National Forest land. Owned by the U.S. Forest Service (100.00%), California (1975). Discovered 1917. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in chert. The ore body strikes N65W and dips 55W, at a thickness of 3.05 meters wide and 33.53 meters long. Mode of origin is sedimentation, secondary mode is oxidation. It is lenticular, disseminated and involves a shear zone. Primary ore control was lithology and secondary was faulting. No wallrock alteration.
At least 4 ore bodies occur in a chert belt associated with greenstone. The length of the ore bodies is 20, 80, 110 and 30 feet. The ore is exposed over intervals for 400 feet and varies in width from 2 to 10 feet. The chert strikes NW and dips nearly vertically. The deposit appears discontinuous, for greenstone is found between manganese exposures. The ore consists of rhodonite, rhodochrosite, bementite and manganiferous chert. The greenstone appears to cut off chert containing manganese, and ore may be part of a roof pendant in greenstone. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 9 (Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include unspecified surface and underground openings/operations.
Analytical data results: Ore grade is 46% Mn, 1.5% Fe and 14.7% silica.
