Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Penyrallt Mine
Started in 1825 and originally worked as Penyrallt Mine, the mine was renamed Catherine and Jane Consols in 1855 after its lady lessors.
Mainly a lead mine, Catherine and Jane Consols also raised copper ore (159 tons of copper ore from Penyrallt was sold at Swansea in 1838/39) and iron ore (115 tons of iron ore were shipped to the Blaina Ironworks in October 1856, with subsequent shipments to the Tredegar Iron Company, both in south Wales)
The mine is reported to have raised 2652 tons of lead ore and 840 tons of magnetic iron ore between 1846 and its closure in 1861. Subsequent, largely unsuccessful, attempts were made to reopen the mine, with work on developing the site continuing intermittently until its final closure in 1877.
Although largely overgrown with forestry, much of the site remains.
