This gold mine is one two abandoned open pits, the north one called Malcolm and immediately south the Challenger pit. Both pits are narrow, trending north-south. They are about 1 kilometre east of the Minara homestead and just north of the Old Laverton Road.

In 1996 Dominion Mining developed two open pits. The Challenger and Malcolm gold pits mined to a depth of 35m produced 126,000 tonnes of ore averaging 3.5 grams per tonne. The ore was transported to the company’s Mt Morgans’s gold mine for processing.

The JORC Resource left at the deposits is 547 000 tonnes of ore at 3.12 g/t yielding 54 875 ounces of gold (at a 1% g/t cut-off).

Gold is found in at least four narrow quartz/silica sub-parallel zones, 1 to 4 metres thick, along a strike length of 1000 metres, down at least 100 metres, the lodes plunging south.
