Historic gold mine.
The Morgans Freehold Company was registered in 1879, and began sinking a shaft. Little information was found on the enterprise, next mentioned in 1886, still sinking the shaft, now only at 114 feet down. Early 1887, the company notes it has been unable to find tributers for the mine, and the company is recommended to be wound up.
A Morgans No.1 Company was formed in 1886, covering only 3 acres of land neighbouring the Morgans Freehold property. Despite the small acreage, a prospectus was issued, and shareholders contributed money. Within a few months they were trying to amalgamate with nearby leases, and the company ceased.
The Morgans Freehold shaft is east of Orion Street.
