Historic gold mine.

The shaft was sunk in 1857 through basalt for 33 metres, and a second shaft shortly after to a depth of 111 metres. The gutter was then located via a cross-cut. The company initially had to cope with much underground water, but when this was overcome, it located some very rich gold from 1861, including many nuggets. Later production decreased and the company closed in 1867 (Canavan). The company produced 42 681 ounces across the ten years. It is noted in 1864, a nugget at 111 ounces was found.

The company was in litigation over land or encroachment with the Great Eastern Company in 1859. A fire and flood at the mine is noted in 1863. While Canavan states the company closed in 1867, newspaper articles mention the old company being reconstructed in 1866; a short lived attempt in 1873 when a prospectus was issued at 35 acres, only for shareholders to find the new company controlled a quarter of an acre; and another relatively short-lived attempt in 1881.

The first shaft was in the middle of Windemere Street, between Eyre and Urquhart streets. The second shaft is just east of the cricket grounds.
