Tsarevo-Aleksandrovskii gold mine is the historical name of an important gold mine, later known as Mariinskii and Leniskii gold mine, located along the riverlet Tashkurganka on the territory of the modern Leninsk village.
Actually, the ore field embraces an array of gold-bearing veins and placers derived from their breakdown, mined by underground and surface techniques in the belt around a granitoid massif, elongated in the meridian direction and pinching out at its north and south edges against belts of limestones and serpentinites. This gold-bearing field is unique because of the quantity of large gold nuggets recovered (more than 2000). It is famous, first and foremost, for the biggest gold nugget ever found in Russia, known as "The Great Triangle" ["ΠΠΎΠ»ΡΡΠΎΠΉ ΡΡΠ΅ΡΠ³ΠΎΠ»ΡΠ½ΠΈΠΊ" in Russian]. The nugget, weighing 36,015.7 grams, was found in 1842 by 18-year-old gold prospector Nikifor Syutkin and is currently preserved in the Diamond Fund (Kremlin Armoury building, Moscow).
Gold in the Tashkurganka placers was found for the first time in 1823 and already in summer 1824 about a dozen of nuggets, ranging in weight from 2 to 8 Russian pounds (1 Russian pound or funt = 409.517 grams), were recovered. In the following years various larger nuggets were found. Ozerskii (1843) mentioned 5 nuggets from 13 to 24 Russian pounds (from 5 to 10 kg). In 1842 the largest nugget ever found in Russia (named the "Great Triangle" for its shape) was recovered; its weight after cleaning from the gangue minerals reached 36,015.7 grams. In 1854, approximately 700 m from the place where "The Great Triangle" was recovered, a nugget of 20.1 kg was found. In 1882 another nugget weighing about 20 kg was recovered again. The sources of these nuggets are the quartz veins mentioned above. Some of them contained gold nests that could reach various kilograms in weight (Smolin, 1970). As an example, in the vein no. 2 of the "Vasyaniskoe" sector were identified two gold nests, which yielded respectively 8.99 and 12.6 kg of metal.
