The Schoorberg Quarry I is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Eijsden-Margraten in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located southeast of Bemelen, southeast of the Mettenberg and west of 't Rooth. The quarry is located on the west side of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Maas Valley. The quarry is located in the area of Bemelerberg & Schiepersberg.
About 100 meters to the northeast is the entrance to the Schoorberg Quarry II and about 250 meters to the west is the Mettenberg Quarry V with Kalkoven (lime kiln) De Valk.
After 1800, the quarry was first mined by block crushers.
From June 4, 1946, work began on deepening the Schoorberg quarry I (on the 't Schoor road) to gain access to the Roother quarry (II) via that route. This was felt to be necessary because the access shaft of the Roother quarry was becoming increasingly further from the work front and hoisting via the shaft had a maximum capacity. An approximately 100-meter-long connecting corridor was dug from two sides, from the Schoorberg quarry I and from the Roother quarry. "Mergelgroeve 't Rooth" was painted above the entrance.
The Schoorberg Quarry I is a small tunnel system with only a few tunnels. the Schoorberg quarry I is connected to the Roother quarryBy means of an approximately 100 meter long connecting corridor. The latter has only one exit via the Schoorberg quarry I. (The old exit of the Roother quarry disappeared with the excavation in the Rooth open-pit quarry.)
The entrance to the quarry is closed with bars, so that bats can use the quarry as a roost.
The quarry is managed by Het Limburgs Landschap and is managed by the D.C. van Schaïk Foundation. The quarry was examined for safety and was approved in 2016 and 2017.
