4,140m elevation. Silver mining started in Spanish colonial times but was later abandoned. Presently the site of intense preparatory work for a new open pit which will be the world's largest mine operated primarily for silver. This will undoubtedly swallow up some of the older localities in the district. 240 million tons ore reserves. Owned by Andean Silver, the bolivian subsidiary of the canadian company Apex Silver Mines.
