Iron meteorite, anomalous hexahedrite (IIG)
Find 1867, 3.63 kg
A heavily corroded mass of Fe-Ni metal (Ni ~5%) dominated by kamacite was ploughed up 1.2 km west of Stamford Hall, Auburn University on Daniel Plantation. Schreibersite is abundant with much smaller amounts of troilite occasionally found in troilite-daubréelite-schreibersite intergrowths. Auburn is not a simple hexahedrite sensu strictu as small islands of taenite accompanied by schreibersite are present. Neumann bands indicate preterrestrial shocks and some regions have been forged and hammered.
Auburn is one of a small group of 6 IIG irons which are characterized by high abundances of schreibersite and low amounts of troilite. It has been suggested that Auburn is a fragment of the Tombigbee iron, but there is no consensus on the issue.
