A Au-Fe occurrence/prospect located in secs. 19 & 20, T23S, R42E, MDM, 7.8 km (4.9 miles) ESE of Mountain Spring (Approximately 0.2 mile SE of Birchum Spring; approximately 5.3 miles NW of Argus Peak; and approximately 3 miles SW of Margaret Ann Spring), on military reservation land (China Lake Naval Ordnance Test Station). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Access: Approximately 0.5 mile S along Birchum Spring Road from its intersection with Mountain Springs Canyon Road, then 0.5 mile SE along Birchum Springs Campsite Road and S for 0.5 mile to the spring. Workings are along the W-facing slope of basalt capped mesa. There isn't much showing. The work must have started by following quartz float up along the hillside. The mill was located approximately 0.5 mile N, and consisted of a very small stamp mill (only the platform remains), plus a small riffle board. The owner/operator was crushing quartz, concentrating and panning the concentrates. A very small operation.
Mineralization is hosted in granite. There are insufficient data about the ore body. Associated rocks include Late Cretaceous basalt. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of 1 caved adit and 5 prospect pits.
