A former Cr occurrence/pair of claims/mine located in sec. 30 & in the center SW¼NE¼ (assumed) sec. 31, T15N, R11E, MDM, 1.3 km (0.8 mile) NNE of Hughes Mill, E of Finning Mill Road, on National Forest land. Owned by L.E. & J.W. Drone. Operated by R.N. Knudsen. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
This is one of many Cr deposits/mines placed into a very large area termed the "Forest Hill Divide area" by Rynearson. That area is based on geological and topographic considerations versus mining districts and overlaps several defined districts. Those Cr occurrences within mining districts are listed under their respective districts, the remainder are listed under Rynearson’s "Forest Hill Divide area."
Mineralization is hosted in dunite. The ore body is lenticular. This deposit occurs in the easternmost of 3 sub-parallel belts of ultramafic rocks that trend northward across Placer County. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface openings comprised of an irregula4r open cut and several pits. A small washing plant was operated on the Horseshoe claim in the NE¼NE¼ sec. 30.
Production data are found in: Rynearson, Garn Arthur (1953).
Production statistics: Year: 1942 (con. Cr ore): 47.39% Cr2O3.
