Plattnerite from
Leadhills, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK

Locality type:Village
Classification
Species:Plattnerite
Formula:PbO2
Comments:There is some dispute about the confirmation of plattnerite from the Leadhills-Wanlockhead Orefield. Although it has been now confirmed on specimens collected from the Susanna Mine in 2010. It would appear that many old specimens have been found wanting, mostly turning out to be Mn-Oxides or mottramite. Work is continuing to try and locate an authentic 'old' specimen in the Natural History Museum London and the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.
Quality for species:Poor for species, only of interest for locality collectors. (#)
Abundance at site:Rare
Confirmation
Validity:Confirmed
Confirmation Methods:XRD
Analysis Reference:University of Manitoba
