Ordinary chondrite, brecciated (H3/4, br)
Fall, 17 April 1851; 1 kg
After the appearance of a bright bolide, 2 small stones were recovered. Two additional weathered stones were recovered a year later. Prominent chondrules, largely equilibrated silicates (olivine - Fa20), and fine-grained Fe-Ni metal indicate that it is an H-chondrite on the borderline between petrologic types 3 and 4. As the meteorite is gas-rich, the meteoritic material must have been close to the surface of a preterrestrial asteroid in its preterrestrial past. Not unsurprisingly, very little information about this small meteorite has appeared in readily accessible literature of recent decades.
Gütersloh is one of 11 witnessed H-chondrite falls recovered in Germany since 1785. The main mass has been held at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin for many decades (~.77 kg in 2000).
