A colonial-era "lime quarry" started ca. 1700, located about 1/2 mile from the better-known
Devil's Den. There are several pits in the immediate area.
Later (1877) owned by Richard S. Spofford, lawyer, and husband of Harriet Prescott Spofford (1835-1921) of Newburyport, noted author and poet. The fireplace in their Deer Island home was made from green precious-serpentine rich rock from the quarry.
