Matacães was a parish in the Torres Vedras municipality, 50 km north of Lisbon. Due to an administrative merger held in Jan 2013 a new and bigger parish was formed "União das Freguesias de Torres Vedras (São Pedro, Santiago, Santa Maria do Castelo e São Miguel) e Matacães".
Note: the name Matacães has a literal translation of "kill dogs" or "dog killer". This name has its origin back in the Middle Ages, in the period of the Reconquest and it.
