The Mn-bearing variety of andalusite (viridine) was described from the south-western flank of Mt. Ragged by Rex Prider in a 1960 paper. The mineral was green with strong pleochroism (yellow-green, emerald-green, golden-yellow) and occurred in Archaean quartz-muscovite schists and quartzites, as layers to 5 mm thick and as sparse porphyroblasts to 2 cm. The viridine contained abundant poikiloblastic inclusions of quartz and iron oxides. Associated accessory minerals were magnetite, ilmenite, rutile and a pale-blue isotropic phase with RI = 1.789, tentatively identified as zincian spinel (gahnospinel). Chemical analyses of two viridine separates yielded Mn2O3 contents of 3.67 and 5.05 wt.%
The discovery of this mineral at Mt Ragged and in the Mica Hills (24 km south of Mt Ragged) was attributed to Mr. H.W. Wheeler of the Kalgoorlie School of Mines.
