Commodities (Major) - Manganese
Development Status: Past Producer
The Tenderfoot Mine is located in the famous Leadville Mining District east of Leadville. The Tenderfoot, Alps No. 3, and Mary Claims made up the Tenderfoot Consolidated Mining Company in 1880. United States Geological Survey Professional Paper 148 states that the mine extracted manganese ore from "blanket deposits" in what was known locally as the Blue limestone. The manganese ore was mapped as first contact ore bodies below the White porphyry and extending downward to a jasperoid floor, about 60 feet above the Parting quartzite. Another book on the mines of Colorado lists that the mine had carbonate ores up to 17 feet thick in places. In 1914, it was reported that a rich ore strike was discovered and that carloads of ore were being shipped daily; however, no records of actual production can be found. The mine was also the subject of several publication protests and adverse claims filed in the Federal Court of Colorado concerning the ownership and patent to the nearby Treasure Vault lode.
Note: some early mine maps list this locality as both the "Old Tenderfoot Shaft" and "New Tenderfoot Shaft".
