The Ord Ranges are 60 kilometres east of Port Hedland, near the coast, just north of the Great Northern Highway and before the DeGrey River crossing. It is known as a source of tiger iron, mined by a local specimen dealer.

Tiger iron is composed of alternating layers of microcrystalline red hematite, cherty quartz, and golden tiger eye.

At the Ord Ranges, tiger iron is found within a highly folded banded iron formation, jaspilite, chert, and shale unit of the metamorphosed Archean Nimingarra Iron Formation.
